Club Brugge declared Belgian champions after season cancellation over COVID-19

A unanimous decision has been reached by the Belgian football chiefs to cancel the rest of the season and subsequently declare Club brugge champions for the season.

Club brugge seats first in the league’s table with 70, giving them a clear cut 15 points lead over second-placed Gent with 55 points.

The decision was made on Thursday in a telephone conference meeting among the league chiefs owing to the glaring spate of the novel Coronavirus across countries of the world which has largely restricted physical gatherings.

This development makes Belgium the first country to conclude its professional league competition for the 2019/2020 season.

At the end of every season however, the league organizes a play-off match to determine the championship winner and the teams to go for Europa competitions but that is believed won’t happen this season as the chiefs will be meeting by the 15th of April, to discuss possible options.
